The Factors You Need Before You Buy Backup Tape

So your thinking about buying a backup tape. This device will will help to prevent your business from a major crisis. Imagine losing your customer records, this is the lifeblood of your business, can you even think of what the outcome would be to this. Well it's obvious that you have if you are searching for more information to buy backup tape, so let's get right down to the nitty gritty.

Tape for your tape device is cheap, but the tape device is far from cheap. But it's important that you understand something. How much would it cost you if you lost that valuable information that is stored on your computer? It may cost you your business at the worst, and thousands at the least. In my eyes neither of them are a welcome choice.

When you are looking at the backup tape you need to consider some factors:

1. Know what your budget is. You don't want to spend your time looking at things that you simply do not have the money to buy.

2. You need to know what kind of data will you are going to backup. Having your plan can make your decision much easier. And how often does this valuable data change, so you can determine how much data will be updated and how frequently. This will also help to set a schedule for your automatic backup, which should run when nobody is on the computer.

There are two types of backups - incremental and entire system.

Incremental is when you only copy files and documents that have been changed since your last backup.

Entire system backup is when you copy your entire drive no matter when the files were changed. So every file and document that is on your hard drive will be copied. This type of backup takes longer but you don't miss anything.

The best method is to do daily incremental backups and weekly entire system backups.

3. You should know what equipment is best for your needs. Tape backup devices will require three key components - hardware, software and tapes. These all work together and you can't get one and not the other. This is important and it may seem stupid that I am saying it but I have to. Make sure that all three of these components are compatible with one another.

You will buy your backup tape depending on their capacity and the size of your data, this will help to narrow down your search. The software for the tape device will often come with the device, but this isn't always the case. Sometimes you are required to purchase it separately.

These are all very important to making your decision much easier.
