Remote Server Backup Solutions
Remote server backups are a great way to relieve the stress of purchasing tons of software and cd's or tapes that you would need when storing it yourself. Your backups will be safe on a secure remote server.
You need to backup your data on the internet because it is easy and secure. If you have a website there is free available disk space that you can use for storage. You wouldn't need to store everything that is on your computer on the remote server, all you want to do is put the files and documents that are valuable to you, such as your digital pictures, and mp3's.
Using a remote server is better than storing your data on a CD that is going to be located in the same place that your computer is. There is always a chance of something happening, like a fire breaking out and destroying both of them because they are located in the same place, or maybe a hurricane. I know it sounds like I am a nervous nelly but these things are very possible, and happen more often then I would care to think of.
When you transfer your files to a remote server you will be using an FTP (file transfer protocol) software, which you can get for free. This program will allow you to move files over to the server, where they are safe. Now that you have your files safe on a remote server it is a good idea to make copies of all of your program installs to ease some pain if something ever happened to your computer. And the same goes for your operating system. Make sure you put these in a safe place. Don't forget about the installation codes that are necessary to complete the programs install. Here are some important steps that you need to take when backing up your computer: Once you copy your program installation exe's and their codes, you need to sit down at your computer and go through all of your files and folders and pick the ones that are important enough to back up. These are going to be the ones that are irreplaceable, and will probably be found in you're My Documents folder. Now that you have gone through your files and selected the important ones you can begin uploading them to your website server using the FTP program. If you are going to be using an online backup service then they will probably offer their own file transfer method. And now you can relax because your files are safe and secure. There is one more thing don't forget to upload the files when you make changes. There's no point in paying money for a remote server backup if you are not going to use it.
